Wednesday, April 28, 2010
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA –– Covia Labs, Inc. today announced former Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security and General Counsel to the National Security Agency, Stewart Baker, as a key business advisor to the company. Mr. Baker will provide strategic counsel, assisting Covia as it rolls out its solution that enables secure and reliable communication between military and emergency response personnel across assorted devices and systems. In addition to his service at the highest levels of the federal government, Baker brings an unparalleled expertise in national security, defense, technology and policy.
“While at DHS and NSA, I witnessed the impact of the lack of interoperable communications between the men and women that serve on the frontline in protecting our country,” said Stewart Baker. “From fire fighters responding to a call, to soldiers in the battlefield, to police at a crime scene, our personnel are challenged to communicate with their mission partners because of proprietary, incompatible communications equipment. Covia has developed a unique solution that provides interoperability between these radios and other devices, solving our nation’s need for secure, dependable communications between multiple agencies responding to and collaborating on the same mission.”
Stewart Baker spent more than three years at the Department of Homeland Security as its first Assistant Secretary for Policy. At DHS, he created and staffed the 250-person DHS Policy Directorate. He was responsible for policy analysis across the department, as well as for the department’s international affairs, strategic planning and relationships with law enforcement and public advisory committees. Baker also previously held the position of General Counsel to the Commission on the Intelligence Capabilities of the United States Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction and the General Counsel to the National Security Agency. Additionally Baker spearheaded the coalition that lead to the successful implementation of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA).
According to David Kahn, CEO of Covia Labs, “Stewart has been at the forefront of technology policy and a long time advocate for the advancement of emergency interoperable communications. His vast knowledge of homeland security needs is difficult to rival and his participation on the Covia team represents another major step forward in our continued growth and success.”
